Bumps in the Bathroom:
And other lost shows

the artist
Behold a collection of obscure indie musicals: Bumps in the Bathroom, BAIL OUT THE MUSICAL, and Lesbian Love Octagon. Shows that premiered in East Village basements and bars for tiny audiences on out of tune pianos and 55-key Casios; done for the love of theatre, untethered from commercial success, by people who loved each other and never believed they couldn’t make magic from egg crates and belting.
Unfortunately, like most off-off-off, these shows were forgotten like a night of drinking. You were there or you weren’t…Now, many years later, we’ve pulled bits and pieces of them out into the sun, orchestrated them and preserved them.
I present to you a little downtown sweetness and subversion, for those who remember, and those who will learn.
Love - Will

The shows
Bumps in the bathroom
By Will Larche
Featuring The Plaid Panthers
A one-man (plus backup “Cuntry Cabaret” with a death wish, Bumps in the Bathroom (2008-2011) invited downtown audiences to do more than just watch—it forced them to decide. From the stages of Pussy Faggot and The Duplex, the show dissected sex work, addiction, and the hollow ache of alienation inside your own gay community, ending on a razor’s edge: Will asking the room if he should end it all. Audiences often answered “no.”
BAIL OUT THE MUSICAL
By The Wreckio Ensemble|
Music and lyrics by Will Larche
BAIL OUT THE MUSICAL (2008-2009) proved an accidental prophecy. Written with The Wreckio Ensemble during the 2008 financial collapse, it asked the question: “What if you had to Republicanize your art to get funding?” The show follows a group of—literally starving—downtown performance artists forced to sanitize their art in order to eat. Think: transforming dense, Pro-Choice, Richard Foreman-esque (so many strings!) operas into jingoistic, xenophobic, anti-abortion, anti-welfare, high school musicals. Sell out, Louise!
Lesbian Love Octagon
Book and lyrics by Kimberlea Kressal
Music and additional lyrics by Will Larche
Lesbian Love Octagon (2010-2013), set in the late 90s on the Lower East Side, was about a less-than-butch dyke with a broken heart whose friends (a bevy of ex-girlfriends and ex-girlfriends' ex-girlfriends) come rushing to her aid, inciting a tempest of lust and betrayal and arguing that happiness is polyamory, protests, and wimmin's bookstores. Pre-Fun Home, pre-The Prom, this early, alternative lesbian musical touched on subjects considered unsellable in mainstream musicals at the time: gay culture beyond cis-males, the transman experience within the gay community, and the hyper-specific lives of young, passionate, LES lesbians.
